Faculty Fellow 2011-2017
Alessandro Mantelero is Full-Tenured Aggregate Professor of Private Law and of Innovation & International Transactions law at the Politecnico di Torino. He has been Director of Privacy at the NEXA-Center for Internet & Society at Politecnico di Torino until April 2017, part-time expert at the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, and programme coordinator of the Double Degree program in Management and IP Law (Polytechnic University of Turin – Tongji University of Shanghai).
In 2016, he has been appointed Expert Consultant by the Council of Europe to draft the new Guidelines on the application of data protection principles to Big data.
His research interests are in the field of law and technology, with a focus on personal data. During the last three years, he investigated the legal issues concerning the use of big data analytics, adopting an interdisciplinary approach in the investigation of the individual and collective implications of the data-driven decision-making processes.
He has held visiting appointments at Harvard (Berkman Center for Internet & Society, 2012), Oxford (Oxford Internet Institute, Visiting Fellow 2013 and 2014), Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (School of Public Administration, Visiting Professor 2013) and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Internet Interdisciplinary Institute, Visiting Professor 2015; Faculty of Law, Visiting Professor 2016).
Alessandro is involved in different national and international research programs: (2012-2015) “European Network of Excellence in Internet Science” project, funded by the European Commission (task leader of the deliverable D5.1.2 on “Internet Privacy, Identity, Trust and Reputation Mechanisms”), (2013-16) Smart mobility, project member (Politecnico di Torino, 5T s.r.l.), (2015) SmartDataNet platform, project member (CSI Piemonte, Piedmont Region).
He has been involved in different private initiatives and research groups. He was member of the Digital Advisory Group at the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy (2011 – 2012) and member of the “Task Force: Control of identity” at Identity Talk in The Tower project (Giesecke & Devrient).
